Brexit Times Ten
As an American, I struggle to view London as modern.
The Great Fire destroyed medieval squalor, then rebuilt on the same narrow, winding streets. Newton, the seed of his thought rooting in deep religion, cleared the path of science. Freud and Marx used the rational moment of the new science to exalt the randomness that now frames the struggle of belief and denial. Darwin, who removed the active God, sleeps in the national cathedral.
The voices of history: not furiously agreeing, not politely disagreeing. The eternal argument now vibrates in the streets, our homes, our jobs.
I can't live here but celebrate this tension and coexistence.
